Building Your Immunity
Your immune system is vital to your health and well-being. This complex and intelligent system stands as the guard at your gate to protect you from various internal and external threats. Without a good immune system, your health will suffer.
Now more than ever, the immune system is being discussed due to COVID-19. Besides this current threat, there are lots of other threats coming at us all the time from various sources. Our body works 24/7 to try and protect us, but we have to help it do that. The good news is you can improve your immunity!
Lots of things negatively affect your immune system; environmental and food toxins, lack of sleep, bad lifestyle choices, genetics, medications, etc. Today, I want to focus on two major culprits that can greatly deplete your immunity and make you more vulnerable.
This sweet and addictive substance is loved by many but can greatly weaken the effectiveness of your white blood cells which are an important part of your immune system. This can last for several hours post consumption of a sugary drink or food. Not to mention that sugar can cause systemic inflammation and other health issues which hinders and distracts your "army of fighters" from attacking other real threats. Although some sugar is okay, too much is just too much. It is best to reduce your overall intake and limit it on a daily basis. For example: don't have a doughnut and a sweet drink in the same day. Choose one.
Stress is any form is very taxing to our mental, emotional and physical self. As I've spoken about before, the stress response releases very powerful chemicals that are effective at their job, but also damaging. Internal threats (thoughts, emotions, physiology, poor nutrition, etc.) and external threats (environment, people, toxins, viruses and bacteria, etc.) trigger the stress response. The more time and energy your body has to spend on managing stress the less time and energy it has to manage your immune system and other vital functions of the body.
More stress = less immune function
These are really challenging times I know. I feel it too. But, the better we can reduce sugar intake and manage our stress the stronger and healthier we will be. Not to mention, it will help in many other ways such as improve sleep, mental and emotional function and weight management.
By the way, in order for a vaccine to work effectively, your immune system must be healthy enough to support it. So, a COVID-19 vaccine might help, but it isn't the cure. A strong immune system is your best prevention - always!

I want to share with you a new app on the market that I love. It is called Sanvello. It is owned by United Health Care, but you do not have to be a UHC plan member to access it. Right now, they are offering it FREE to everyone due to the COVID-19 crisis. I use it myself on a daily basis to help me be consistent with healthy habits. It's fun and easy to use. Features include:
